Onward! Christian Soldiers
It is always a bit surprising to discover that Sir Arthur Sullivan--of Gilbert and Sullivan--was the composer of "Onward, Christian Soldiers." Originally, however, Reverend Baring-Gould had set his text to the accompaniment of the slow movement of the Haydn D-Major Symphony and as such it was first sung at a Children's Festival in 1864. Haydn was discarded in favor of Sullivan as soon as his stirring melody was published seven years later. today, it remains one of the most celebrated marching hymns ever written.

Words by Sabine Baring-Gould

Music by Sir Arthur Sullivan
Onward, Christian Soldiers! Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus Going on before;
Christ, the royal master, Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle, See, His banners go!

(Chorus)
Onward, Christian Soldiers! Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus Going on before.

Like a mighty army, Moves the Church of God:
Brothers, we are treading, Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided, All one body we,
One in hope, in doctrine, One in charity. (Chorus)
